The Magic Of The BAR Test

The last time you were here we went over how to make sure your writing doesn’t make your reader hate you and their life. If you missed it, check it out here;

So, now that your writing looks the part. It’s time to make it easy for the reader. The hard part is done, we’ve hooked them but you also have to make sure they want to keep reading.

So how do we do that?

The same way we’d do it in a bar.

Remember now that you’re dressed up to look good, you have to talk the talk and walk the walk.

“As a business owner your job is to solve problems. Someone having electrical issues? It’s a good thing you’re a certified electrician with your own business to solve that customer’s problem. This is the basic principle of running your own business most business owners already know, but what happens when no one knows you even exist? How are we supposed to solve problems if Larry from across the street doesn’t even know who you are as a business? We Market, but we market in a very specific and strategic way that actually allows us to attract clients and make sales.”

If you got through all that, without just scanning it and your brain sending it to the trash can. You’re a better man than I am.

All this, it doesn’t pass the BAR test.

Writing, talking, seduction. These are all the same at their core, if you mess up the basics then you need to go back to the drawing board.

What Is The BAR Test?

Well, the BAR test is undisputed, undefeated. It’s the 10x world heavyweight champion in terms of tests. Even if there are no bars in the world it’ll still work.

You’ll always be able to use it to massively improve any piece of text (we call this copy)

Here’s how to use it;

‘would I say this to an actual human being in a conversation’

It’s super simple and it works every single time.

Look at this sentence:

As a business owner your job is to solve problems. This is the basic principle of running your own business most business owners already know, but what happens when no one knows you even exist?

In a real conversation, that would sound something like:

Most business owners already know they solve problems for a living. But that’s hard to do if people don’t even know you exist, right?

See how it flows? It makes sense right?

The first sentence sounds like an alien pretending to be human, the second is just a human. 

The Easiest And Fastest Way To Write Better

Here’s the trick that will work every time. It’s so simple it’ll sound stupid… but if you give this a chance I can guarantee your readers will be hooked for life.

Here’s the magic trick:
Read your text out loud

Actually be conscious, understand its flow. Where do you stutter? Where does it sound weird? Would you really say that in a conversation?

Act like you’re talking to someone you know. Here’s another example I recently read:

“But, most of the people running businesses nowadays barely even think about what problem their product is even solving, let alone whether or not their most likely buyer is male or female, what their age range is, what their interests are, or even what haircut they have”

This is a 47 word sentence, we call this a run-on sentence. It needs a period, why? Because in real life we rarely speak in 47 word sentences.

Conversation has a flow, so does writing. Do your best to maintain that flow, not break it.

There’s still variation, some sentences are long. Some are short.

Like this. Only three words.

Start practising this everyday, every week. You’ll notice the improvement, it’s subtle but gradual.

When you apply this to your content, you’ll notice the change in responses.
